Dr. Sarah Ryan – Advancing Law, Libraries, and Information Science

Dr. Sarah Ryan is an attorney and Associate Professor of Information Science at the University of North Texas (UNT), where she directs the Law Librarianship Program—a nationally recognized program that has served law libraries across the country for more than 20 years.

Holding five degrees—including advanced studies in Communication, Library Science, and Law—Dr. Ryan brings a wealth of interdisciplinary expertise to her teaching, research, and practice. Her career spans law, librarianship, and academia, with professional experiences that bridge scholarship and service.

As an attorney with the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center, she represented veterans in appeals before the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs. As a librarian at Yale Law School, she guided students and faculty in developing innovative and rigorous research projects. As a scholar, she has taught and conducted research at universities in Connecticut, New York, Ohio, and Texas, using social science methods to study topics ranging from welfare reform and nonprofit fundraising to peacebuilding in Rwanda and health information services in rural libraries.

In recent years, Dr. Ryan has collaborated with computer and data scientists at UNT to develop artificial intelligence methods for legal analysis. She also teaches students advanced methods of legal research, including specialized work in patents and emerging technologies.

Through her teaching, scholarship, and professional service, Dr. Ryan continues to advance the fields of law librarianship, legal research, and information science, while preparing the next generation of leaders in these disciplines.
